The importance of selling

The importance of selling

What words come to mind when you hear the word “salesman”… Sleazy? Pushy? Unethical? Money grabbing? Arrogant? Cocky?
However, when you peel back the layers of how important sales is, not just as a career, but in life, you may think twice.
Sales is absolutely everywhere in life. You would be foolish to ever say “sales isn’t for me” or “I’m just no good at sales”. I personally believe if you learn to sell, you learn to live life to the full.
I also believe you are either selling or being sold to at all times. Life is a sale! You are sold from a young age that you should “go to school, get good grades and get a good job” – I was personally sold on that myself! I went to university because I was told that it was a good idea by family and friends.
What about the job you are in? That job was sold to you – why did you apply for it? Why did you take it? Because you were sold on the idea you wanted to work there.
What about dating? When you like someone, you do whatever it takes to sell yourself to that person, hoping they will buy!
What about friends? When you are trying to persuade them to come on a night out?
What about being a parent? Kids are the best sales people in the world! They don’t stop pestering until they get their own way – even when they don’t get their own way, it seems they have a special gift that enables them to get the parent to cave in eventually.
How many times have you found yourself in a debate with people? That is a sale as well! You are trying to sell your ideas and thoughts to that person, hoping they will buy your thought process.
Politicians are salesmen/women – they spend their life debating and trying to sell people their ideas. Politicians are sales people who are trying to sell you their vote!
Why do so many kids follow in the footsteps of their parents – because that’s what they have been sold!
You see, every single day you are either selling or being sold to. That’s a fact. Now the big question you need to ask yourself if is, do you want to “sell or be sold?”
Now, I believe you initially need to be sold to, but once you have, it is your duty to get yourself in a position where you begin to sell to people. People only make money by selling. Which means if you go through life constantly being sold to, you will never truly find success, because you will always be sold on someone else’s dreams of life plans.
Being sold to is good initially – because it’s how you find what you want to do in life. But just be careful where you are buying the information from – look at their current situation (financially and personally) and ask yourself if you desire to have what they have and be the way they are.
Prior to finding sales, I was stuck in a lab and my boss was far from inspiring – I was going to work to pay the bills and get by. Thank God I wasn’t sold on this option. And thank God I wasn’t sold on his thought process!
